rubber for windows and side mirror. 200 1990

Recently I purchaced some new rubber glass scrapers from Dave Barton. I replaced the rears with no problem.
It looks like I need to at least detach the mirrors to do the fronts. True?
If so how is that done? I removed one of those little tabs at the bottom of one and only saw a bolt with a wire coming through.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize it didn't involve removing the inside door panel etc. I'm ordering some new ones...

One more tip, use a plastic pry to get the thing off, you don't want a dinged up paint job to go along with your new rubber.

I used the set from Dave Barton's website and it took less than a hour to do all four doors. Once you get the first one done the other three go a lot faster. Be careful what type of lubricant you use on the rubber, you just need a little anyway once you get the dimple opened up. I used the large screwdriver and pry method. Did take a large punch and re-made the dimple, after the new rubber was installed so it would not slip.

Good Luck,

Paul

Question as I have been contemplating replacing mine:

1.Does it require removing the door panels on the inside first or is it done entirely from the outside of the car?

2. I assume you lower the glass all the way?

3. Tips on removing the old rubber?

4. Precautions?

1. No, you don’t have to remove the door panels.
2. No need to lower the glass.
3. Unhook the metal strips just below the glass on the outside. The rubber is attached to those. The metal strips are held snug to the door on each end, except in the front – in which case they go under the mirror. They are also held by rails on the top of the doors. They’re seated on pretty good. On the front doors just straighten the tabs at the back of the metal pieces and pry up starting from the back above the door handles. Carefully pry up with a large screw driver with something under your pry spot to protect the paint. Just work your way toward the front and it will pop off.

What I did was cut the old rubber off the metal with a utility knife right on top of the groove which holds the rubber, bent up the metal where it’s indented on each end, and then slid the remaining piece of rubber out.
Before I slid in the new piece of rubber into the metal I sprayed the receiving groove on the metal with spray silicon lubricant and then sprayed a little more when the rubber got bound up from the sliding rubber.

To separate the rubber from the metal, I drilled out the dimple in the metal. This releases the pressure of the metal squeezing the rubber. Spraying the rubber and metal added lubricant to slide the rubber out. Then, I could slide the new rubber in. I think the dimple is overkill for holding the rubber in place.

False. Fronts have one tab and as you see it's at the rear end. I just slightly staighten out that tab. Then I gently lever that rear end up to separate the scraper assembly from the door. As you are doing this, you'll notice that the front end is tucked under the mirror. The scraper assembly can be pulled out from under the mirror. Installation is the reverse.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike
