1995 940 Sudden Stalls 900 1995

The '95 940 which I purchased new and gave to my son about 6 years ago is about to come (limp) home to roost. He had it shipped from Atlanta to San Francisco where he has been driving it for the past 2 years. It has 145K miles on it and has started to suddenly die when he is driving. It always happens either at idle or when he lets off the gas to slow down or stop. He took it to a local dealer who installed a mass air meter and some misc. hoses. Unfortunately, the 'fix' didn't fix the problem and it continues to stall. He has taken it back to the dealer to re-diagnose/fix the problem. However, he has lost confidence in the car and is shopping for a replacement vehicle.

My question is this...if I go through the trouble to have it shipped back to the East Coast, what issues should I anticipate having to deal with over the next couple of years? I meticulously maintained the car (109K) miles before he took it over, and I believe that he has changed the oil and performed necessary repairs. He only drives about 5-6K miles per year.

Any thoughts on the stalling issue, and would it be advisable to get this car back into the home stable? I usually have to rely on indie mechanics or local dealer to get work done.

Thanks for your advice.

Thanks to everyone their input. My son took it back to the dealer, who apologized profusely and is going to put the air mass meter back in the car. They said that it was a fault in the wiring harness and that they were going to repair it. He may decide to keep the car after all depending upon if the repair actually fixes the stalling problem.

If the car is a Bosch ignition(round coil pass side of engine compartment) then it sounds like your power stage is failing. Could also be CPS or RSR.
If it is a Regina fuel system(square coil drivers side of engine compartment)
clean the contacts where the top of coil attaches to bottom and where it attaches to body(see FAQ's). Also if its a Regina the fuel pump is due for replacement as they generally live 150k miles or so. Also see FAQ's for how to check OBD codes yourself.

Sounds like a decent car worth keeping. The problem is bound to be something simple, like the ones mentioned OR, perhaps,if the car stalls when LOW on fuel, the in tank hose-still, easy to fix.

I have 2 95 940s, and have had similar problems. Once it was the speed sensor (mounted atop the bell housing). Easy and inexpensive fix. Another time it was the fuel pump relay, another simple and inexpensive fix.

A search on this site should give you all the info you need.

Good luck
