What kind of car do you have? What does the light do?
I think that "mechanic" just wants to replace your transmission and take money from you. If you have a 940 it would be most unusual for the tranny to fail but very common for the relay to fail. He could not possibly check an intermittent relay unless he replaced it and let you drive it. Replace or resolder the relay. Could also be the switch, wiring or solonoid but unlikely the tranny.
