IME, they Will total the car so be prepared with what the law is about buying it back, negotiating a buy-back price, etc.
And, afterwards the car will have a salvage title, at least in some states.
My fave car was a 90 740 that I got after it had very small front end damage and air bag displacement. It was sold at auction to a guy who fixed only Volvos, so it was decent when I got it from him except the sensor for the airbag was not replaced and I never bothered as I was told it was quite expensive. In any case, I put 100k on the car (290k total) and it was hit last year and Really totaled. I still collected $2300k (I had kept it up pretty well) so having a salvage title may not be a bad thing.
There is a place in Taunton MA that rebuilds sensors also. BBA reman. They rebuild electrics and are part of a world wide company, and the swedishbrick board has good feedback as well as other places I've seen.
