I was reminded by bluePV544's thread on K&N filters (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1407242/444-544/kn_filters.html) that I saw some photo's on the www of some very nice red foam filters.
Thankfully volvosteve left a link at the the bottom of the thread and I managed to track down the source. We previously ran cone shaped K&N's and were very happy with them, but we were looking for a more traditional appearance.

http://su-filters.com turned out to be "Old Kombi" on the BB. "Old Kombi" is now at the top of my "Volvo good guy" list and shares the dubious honour with "Volvo From Heck". I'd do business with these guys any day.

The filter housings are top class and bolted straight on without any problems.
Checkout the su-filters website, lots of designs available.

Here they are fitted to the car, '61 544 Sport with a B20 :
