Exhaust Manifold To Down Pipe Fitting / Connection ........ 700 1991

1991 Volvo 740 sedan auto with Regina. Just got this car couple of weeks ago and am bit by bit getting it back in shape. The down pipe presses into the very top part of it where it is bolted onto exhaust manifold. This area where the down pipe presses in extends about 3 inches or so below where it bolts onto ex. manifold. Is this normal or should it not be one solid piece rather then a press in connection here ? Maybe it used to be welded but weld came loose ? It does however appear to have been made to be a press in connection. In any case I am getting a little bit of a rattle here. What can/should I do ?? Thanks.

The first 3" or so of each pipe is doubled or "sleeved". I presume it's welded at the top flange. Never heard of any looseness there. The picture below shows the "sleeves" on an OE front pipe (same for both FI types).

Thank you Lucid. Indeed mine looks just like your foto. Guess what happenned is that weld came loose with mine. Perhaps rather then replace I can remove and have it welded in this area ?

I really can't say. Those double-walled pipes are pretty snug together and I've never seen or heard of one loosening. If it's just a "little" rattle and there's no exhaust leak I'd try to stop the rattle with wire or something.

That is normally one piece from manifold to converter. Sounds like something jerry rigged. Install a guillotine muffler clamp.

Thanx for reply. I thought it might have been jerry rigged. I am familiar with regular muffler clamps which have bolt that is U shaped and U shaped holding section. What is a guillotine muffler clamp ?? Thanks again.

I have seen clamps that clamp from both sides instead of one side just being a U shaped threaded rod. The term guillotine was my own name for it.
