Any tricks to getting the drive shaft spline boot back on? 200

Took the driveshaft apart while rebuilding the OD and now I can't seem to get that boot back on both sides. I believe its causing my shudder in first gear while accelerating. I'll have to look over the mounts but passenger and transmission mounts are new meryle mounts.

Thanks.

By the way. The rebuild was a total success with it working like new. It switches into OD so smoothly that you can't even tell without watching the rpm and dash light.

If it's very difficult, it means the boot is old and hard. You may find that once you stretch it enough to get it back on, it splits. I suggest warming it with either a heat gun (be careful) or very hot water. It is, as another poster mentioned, much easier on the bench. If all else fails, with another person to help, get one small area started with a small screwdriver. Have your helper hold that area in place. Work your way around with another screwdriver or a small, hooked tool (a dull one).

Good to see someone found a source for the boot. I've purchased them from Swedish Engineering and from the wholesale/mailorder Volvo dealers, but until now had never seen been able to source at a parts house.

thanks for the advice. I'm also thinking of just getting a new one that might stretch better. This thing is really just not wanting to go on.

I'm going to drop the transmission for a clutch change here in the next few weeks so hopefully the splines stay clean enough until then. The OD rebuild didn't solve the slipping in 4th at high rpms. I got a new Luk clutch kit off ebay for $89 but I'll be having to buy a different throw out bearing which is cheap at eeuroparts for an 83. Just have to wait for the kit to arrive and see if it has the pilot bearing with it and alignment tool before ordering the spline boot.

When I put mine together a couple of weeks ago, I slipped the smaller end of the cap over the driveshaft, put a little grease on the inside of the cap, and then slid the two pieces together; the cap slipped right into the groove with the lube.

My rubber piece was really difficult to get on the small end and seems impossible on the front/big end. The driveshaft has a lip to it and its like trying to get a small tire on a rim or something. I've tried two screwdrivers and all sorts of attempts but its just moving around too much and not getting enough of it on to get all of it on.

My vibration is due to the driveshaft center support since all the mounts are looking fine. I'll have to drop it down a bit and maybe get a better hold on the boot.

Thanks

Are you trying to get it on while it's mounted in the car? It's a lot easier if the driveshaft is on the workbench.
