felt oil seal vs neoprene oil seal?? 120-130 1967

Hi all:

I just learned that the crankshaft housings in the front and the back will only accept oil seals made out of felt, and not neoprene ones.

Is it possible for the housings to be removed and re-machined to accept neoprene seals? Or does that have to require whole housing replacement to upgraded ones?

Or...just stick to just replacing to new felt seals? How much difference in sealing quality between the felt and the neoprene?

Any advice/suggestion appreciated. Thanks!

My front seal seems to only leak when the motor is turned off after driving.. Yesterday I took it for a drive and looked under the car with motor running and there was no leaking,, then shut the motor off and right away a small pool of oil formed on the pavement.. ( I forgot to mention this little oddity in my recent thread regarding the front seal oil leaks a couple of days ago..) Uncle Baggley.. Hi Barry... My computer got nuked a few weeks ago so I lost your e-mail address..Also,, on E Bay there is a 1970 122S for sale.. I can`t remember if you had a 1970 or not and I can`t remember your number from the Yacht Club either,,darn it!!! LOL

Hi guys, many thanks for all the replies to my inquiries about the oil seals. I'm now convinced that the upgrade to neoprene seals is the way to go!

I believe IPD also sells the modified housings ,as well as Walrus 3 , so dependant upon where you live shipping costs may be the deciding factor ?

Another advantage of the neoprene seal is that they are self-centering around the crank hub. It can sometimes be difficult to get the felt ones centered properly, since the gap between the metal retaining ring and the hub is only a few thou.

Yes they can be machined. I think I've seen Walrus3 mentioning he has some modified ones available before.

The neoprene seals actually have some sealing action. The felt seals mostly just slow the oil drips down. I wouldn't really scrub the driveway down though, redblocks have plenty of other ways they can generate oil drips.
