Well, we went over all of the environmental things in the last post of this, very recently, so hopefully we won't' beat that dead horse for another year or two.
The thermostat in the airbox closes a little door that allows exhaust heat to warm the air charge coming in and makes warm ups a little quicker when it's cold. If the thermostat fails (Which they ALWAYS do), the door stays shut and feeds hot air to the AMM continuously, burning it out and causing an expensive repair. If your state has inspections where they pop the hood, and you want to disable the thermostat, you should keep the stove and pipe in place and just block the air door in the box open.
