ZDDP oil additives 700

I stumbled across an article today about how ZDDP (zinc and phosphorous additives) are being slowly eliminated from modern oils.

http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2010/11/tribology

Should my 92 745 (B230F) be concerned? If I know what a flat tappet is (and I'll admit that I may not) I'm pretty sure my brick has 8 of them.....

Bob

They are being phased out I think to prolong the cat life. Some oils still have the usual dose. Shell Rotella T has it. The B230 has flat tappets.

Yes, your brick does have a form of them and what teh zinc does is leave a coating that protects when the wear surface runs dry, not a huge problem with the overhead cam /lifter bucket design as oil tends to pool up there, but these are engines that it wouldn't hurt to have the extra protection. You can get additives or you can just get synthetics that are still made to the old standard, I know Amsoil has a few oils that they left alone when teh new changes came out and are still made to the old spec.

Hello,

ZDDP has been determined to harm catalytic converters, hence its demise in most commercially available oils.
