In the middle of timing belt change and . . . 200

"When removing the outer (larger pulley, there was no key to maintain the pulley in place on the crankshaft."

There are no removable square keys.
The crank sprocket is keyed to the crankshaft with built-in key. The belt pulley has a slot that keys it to the "nib" on the front of the crank sprocket.
