240DL - steering rack identification (again!) 200

I'm confused, and I hope you kind folks can help. I recently bought a (cheap/neglected) 1985 240. The rack leaks fluid like a sieve, and thus requires replacement.

The ID plate in the trunk identifies the rack as type 3, indicating ZF. Looking at the rack though, it doesn't match the description of the ZF rack, since it has small openings at the end of the bellows.

Please can someone tell me if this is a ZF rack, and if this would be a suitable replacement:

Many thanks in advance!

I can't tell which rack you have. The front view of the right side does look like a CAM rack boot (outer end fits to tierod rather than a larger plastic disk of the ZF).

However, the front left side view doesn't show the outer end of that boot, nor the 2-bolt removable access cover at the bottom end of the pinion shaft that I'd expect to see on a CAM rack. So it does NOT look like a CAM rack to me either.
The blue color says it may be a rebuilt rack, possibly a TRW, which has CAM-like boots.

But it's really a moot point anyway since most rack rebuilders know it's one or the other (CAM or ZF) and will include the few simple mounting parts for a ZF if they send you a CAM, or vice versa. I know that's what Jorgen Automotive does (call 800-333-0060).

Glad someone with more experience can verify my findings! I think it maybe a ZF rack with the wrong boots on, or the wrong tie rod. If that's even possible.

I think I'll order the one I linked to earlier. A little more expensive than Jorgen, but I can't afford the time for them to rebuild my rack and send it back.

"A little more expensive than Jorgen, but I can't afford the time for them to rebuild my rack and send it back."

With common rack types like yours, I'd expect Jorgen to have what you need on hand, with no turn-around wait time for rebuilding. Give them a call if you're interested. I've found them to be very easy to work with (3 racks to date).

Thanks for that, I will follow your recommendation and give them a call.

Just a follow up, it was indeed a TRW re-manufactured ZF rack.

Thanks Lucid.
