So tonight my brother's 86 244 (M46) that I sold him 3 months ago has the clutch cable break. The cable wasn't that old and it actually wore out the holes on the end that hooks to the pedal. Culprit was another firewall splitting. My 83 split and caused the cable to break about 5 weeks ago. I have yet to remove the firewall to have it welded. My friend who is a professional welder said it would be a much better weld if I could get it on the bench and have both sides worked on.
That involves removing the heater hoses and steering column which has kept me waiting for the right moment.
Anyways if you have a standard transmission you may not be noticing the split from the engine side. Its much easier to see it pulling away in the beginning up top on the inside and then it tares down the side about 2 or 3 inches towards the center of the car. Same looking tare on both cars.
If your cable is constantly out of adjustment look at this closely. I was told before on here to look but I couldn't see it right away until I presume it was too late.
