Is anyone aware of the very early 240s using a differently sized front glass? This one measures about 24 3/16. My glass shop is telling me the correct size for the 77 is 24 even. The 24+ seems to fit with room to spare. I'm a little concerned about the radii though. I'm also worried that they may be using a glass spec'd for another vehicle. Any thoughts out there? I am reasonably sure the glass is the same from 75-93.

With finally a clear day, after six, glass went in yesterday. No issues at all. The later glass (with tint strip) fit perfectly. We did find one, hard rubber spacer block in the bottom. My glass guy installed new, urethane blocks. Though there was slightly less room in the cavity when in place, there was ample room around the glass for the clips on the perimeter to accept the stainless moldings without contacting the glass. Looks great!
Thanks to everyone for their input, including Bob Haire. Happy holidays to all.

Hi Dave,
No personal experience here, just a reaction to my previous thought windshields had not changed size or shape since 140 series, excepting your recent post about the embedded antennas.
Looking at the green book, alongside a picture of a hand wielding a ballpein hammer at the base of the windshield setting, there's a note that says "Modification of windscreen/windshield frame from old type to new one (1975-1977)"
"Remove metal clips and scrape off sealant from the recesses. Tap down the recess flaps to obtain a straight and level surface"
Further along in the book, references are made to different part numbers for spacers and clips: i.e. 6mm spacers for tinted screen and 8mm for clear. Clip kits have differing p/n's.

Spacers? That's interesting. Perimeter or height from the cavity? Does is specify what space exactly they are adjusting?
Thanks Art,

Sorry, assumed again. Figured you knew about the little rubber blocks between the bottom of the pinchweld and the glass. Two, I think. But may be the 77 doesn't have them originally? The idea I got from the manual notes is perhaps there are some tabs protruding in sheet metal, doing the same job as the rubber blocks.

Interesting, I've never found any blocks, but it makes sense. The tabs may be the molding clips. These early cars, with the 1" wide stainless surround in pieces, do not use the plastic "clip under glass" clips, but rather have the steel clips spot welded to the frame. I'll have to take a good look at this one before my glass guy shows up. I don't think there are spacers, but the glass has been changed once already.
Thanks Art,

When I replaced the windshield in our '89 wagon, first, they did not re-use the chrome strips. Next, the top and bottom centers of the glass for about 2 inches were very slightly smaller, maybe not even quite 1/16 of an inch, than the old glass, donno why. In any event I like the look of having no chrome strips better. Looks "cleaner".

Hi,
The glass from Volvo is about $120. I do believe though and to my discontent that the metal trimmed glass is no longer available :(
Do you have any pictures? I also need to replace my glass in my 1977 Volvo 264 GL.

Goatman, here's what I know so far:
According to Turner Volvo in Sacto and ....I can't remember which of the other "mail order" dealerships I called a few weeks ago, all of the early glasses are NLA. That includes the ones with the wired in antenna, which they show part numbers for (!!). It is strange to note that most of the on-line places show the glass as available, install tomorrow, make an appt, etc etc.
The glass in the car now, which has to be replaced, carries 43R00089. This is an OEM number and doesn't cross to the aftermarket for whatever reason.
Dimensions for the early glass are listed as 25 x 57.5. Later glass is 24.2 x 57.5. Thus, about 13/64 height difference.
The glass in the car now measures over 24 1/8 and there is ample room before the cavity ends for another 1/16 or so of glass. I'm hoping my guy will brave the rain and bring over the later glass so we can do a test fit.
I can only guess that all the places showing stock are using the later glass. Sure seems like it will fit and I don't foresee a problem with the clips or moldings. We are talking about 1/32 inch more glass by the time you divide it top to bottom, over the glass I have installed now.
I'm more concerned about contour and/or corners!
Sadly, there is no clear glass, even in the later size. We must go with the tint strip at the top regardless.

David,
That’s pretty shitty. I wear a drivers cap, to hell with the tint strip. I also have the glass with the built in antenna. I might take a picture later.
Do you have access to any of these part numbers?

I have to say, when I tore the dash apart on this car and found two antenna cables, and then the contacts at the base of the windshield, I was flabbergasted. I had no idea Volvo did the windshield antenna routine. I remember them so well from our early 70s Oldsmobiles, and I've been trying to remember the cutesy name GM had for them.
Sorry, if I wrote down the various numbers at one point, I've since trashed them. This early car really cries out for the clear glass, so I'm a bit disappointed, but such is life. The strip is not very dark from the supplier I use, so not too noticeable. Also the car is dark green, so less so. By tomorrow noon it will be a foregone conclusion.
Cheers!
