Can you shift into reverse without grinding the gears ? Once you have to shut the car off to put in in first or reverse, it's time. Either that or before a long trip...

If your car has a cable operated clutch, adjusting it carefully might get a little more life out of it.

It is possible to drive a car without the clutch at all, but it is more than a little dangerous in traffic.
