A Small Holiday Gift to the Board and its Members - LH Jetronic 2.2 from 2.0 200 1977

Hi,

Today I found a paper clip. It was a nice thick one shaped like a bowtie. I had ordered the Snap-On wire terminal tool that was too thick and mangled the Bosch connectors and terminals. I filed the tool down and it broke off, so much for that $8. I had read Art Benstein’s post about using a paper clip to unhook the Air Mass Meter connector terminals, and David’s post about converting his 1983 Coupe. I put the paper clip in my pocket.

A couple of months ago I looked in the Santa Fe craigslist ads for Volvo. I found a 1987 240 with a transmission problem for a low price. I didn’t want another car, but what I did want is the engine control system and a heater box. I called the old lady up and proposed a flat price for whatever, and since she was going to junk the car anyway, gladly obliged. The trunk barely shut that day.

The conversion works great. The Intel 8052 Microcontroller is quite a bit quicker then the earlier logic, and it shows in part load throttle response. Otherwise, driveabilty seems very similar to the earlier AMM and ECU. Rewiring the connector for the new meter was not as difficult as I expected. Even with care I damaged two terminal pins, and got off lucky. The terminals are VERY fragile and there was no exception for me. I’m just glad I didn’t wreck all six like I expected to. A help was preloading the backside of the terminal while I released the tang from the front. Practicing on a spare connector helped also. It might have been better to chamfer the end of the tool for easier insertion, in hindsight. Flatting the edges of the paper clip to a square cross section was easily accomplished with a hammer. Bending the tangs upward makes for a nice click when reinserted into the connector.

Better then Snap-On

LH 2.0 Connector for 007 AMM and 544 ECU

LH 2.0 Connector for 002 AMM

A special thanks to Dave and Art Benstein, and a Merry Christmas to all!!!!
