blown engine? 200 1987

Howdy All, I have 1987 245 that I recently did a lot work to. REbuilt head, head gasket, timing belt, water pump. Just started it up at -10 in butte,mt and after ten minutes smelled very bad smell of burning oil. Seems like smoke coming out the number one exhaust manifold area. It is night, and cold. And I have miles to go. Is this cooked or what? Any ideas.
I have been changing the oil pretty frequently with mann filters to break it in. But this last interval has been 1700 miles. I have had a new vapor box with me but have not put it in due to the cold.
My limited ideas are: burnt valve.
John

Have a look behind the cam pulley to see if the seal has popped out. This happened to me awhile back when on on the freeway. LOTS of oil onto the manifold at #1.

It can be temporarily fixed by taking off the cam belt cover for access, and siliconing the seal back in the best you can. Or just push it back in with a putty knife if you're stuck on the road somewhere and maybe it will hold for awhile. Have lot's of oil with you when driving where you need to go. You'll smell it if it pops out. I got home this way.

    #1 Exhaust Manifold Smoke.

The oil Pressure sensor is behind that Runner. You might have popped that and it's spraying on the Runner. If the Valve cover leaks in the front where it rotates up for teh Cam, that oils will run down onto #1.
If you have a few thousand miles on the Head Job, I would not suspect you made a mistake there. Very cold temps might lead to Shrinkage and leakage.
Did the engine get noisey or are you just fearing the worst with the Smell and smoke?

    John,

The symptom of smoke rolling off of the exhaust manifold just sounds like an oil leak onto the manifold to me. I can't read in any likelihood of this symptom meaning a burnt valve. Maybe you just have a leaking valve cover gasket since, being new, it might have settled.

How many miles have you put on the engine since installing the rebuilt head and gasket set? Have you checked the oil for traces of coolant? Are there any other symptoms?

Odd that the car would run perfectly well one day and have a burnt exhaust valve the next but it is possible. Usually valves burn because they do not seat properly (the valve should seat flat to the head), which would indicate a problem with your new head. If it is indeed a burnt valve, you will have low compression in that cylinder and the engine will misfire or run unevenly.

    ANSWER blown engine? 200 1987

    Hi,

If your engine sounds ok, no abnormal noises and the tempeurature guage stays normal, I would drive on.

Do you have a lamp? Check the oil level and check for leaks onto the manifold.
