blown engine? 200 1987

Howdy All, I have 1987 245 that I recently did a lot work to. REbuilt head, head gasket, timing belt, water pump. Just started it up at -10 in butte,mt and after ten minutes smelled very bad smell of burning oil. Seems like smoke coming out the number one exhaust manifold area. It is night, and cold. And I have miles to go. Is this cooked or what? Any ideas.
I have been changing the oil pretty frequently with mann filters to break it in. But this last interval has been 1700 miles. I have had a new vapor box with me but have not put it in due to the cold.
My limited ideas are: burnt valve.
John
