Distributor Cap and Rotor 700 1990

I am attempting to tune up our 1990 740 GL w/Rex-Regina ignition. Our mechanic suggests work that can be done by a DIYer to us and said the rotor and cap and plug wires need to be changed soon.

This Distributor cap is the type that is in the rear of the engine compartment by the firewall.

I removed both the cap and rotor and replaced them as well as the plug wires.

The car ran before I did this work and now the car turns over but will not start.

A few questions I have are:

1.Does the rotor need to be in a certain position like other cars I've seen and if so is there some mark that I should see. (AKA is it at 12 o clock)

2. Normally when you switch plug wires you hear a misfire type of sound but I am not hearing that. could this be from switching the actual plug wires. I know I have the right plug to the right cap but the actual wires might be switched.

3. How fine are the tolerances on the spinning rotor. It seems as though I have put the rotor on as tight as I can push it back on the shaft.
