1980 242 GT. Its an automatic which, I didn't think the GT came with. But, figured maybe it was something someone payed to have when it was new. So, according to everything I find online it should just be a 3 speed. But, it'll shift 3 times than a 4th is the OD isn't off. So, this makes it a 4 speed? I didn't think the AW70 or AW71 avail in 1980? The gear selector has "1,2,D,N,P" And an OD button on the side.

    From the 1980 GT spec at customers.volvocars.com

    Transmission

    Manual: Four-speed, fully synchronized transmission. Electrically-operated overdrive
    Automatic: Three-speed with a floor-mounted shift lever, with an illuminated PRND21 pattern

    And heck is right about the OD indicator on the early cluster. My 242 had the M45 when I got it. When I put in the M46 I installed a bulb and ran the wire to the approprite terminal on the big connector. #12 I think it was for that year.

    I can't answer whether or not an automatic was available on the GT--I would assume it would be--and if they were -- a 3 speed is what would have been original in your car. So it seems that someone upgraded to a later OD transmission, shift assembly, switch, wiring and all. A look underneath to find the OD solenoid will confirm that. -- Dave

      Someone would have gone to a lot of trouble. As the dash gauge even has the OD light. Wasn't the dash changed in 81? So, to have an 80 dash with the OD light.....How to I post pics here? I can send one.

    The 1980 Owners Manual specs say 3 trannys were available:

    • M45 4-speed manual
    • M46 4-speed + OD
    • AW55 or BW55 3-speed Auto (no OD)

    The shifter button may have been put on all cars (for the M46), just not wired on your AT version.

      It's an automatic. It will shift three times with the OD off. If I'm doing down the interstate at 65 and turn it OD off it will downshift. It is shifting 4 times with the OD on, light off.

        An AW 70 or 71 should have a data plate on the left side someplace with 03-70 or 03-71 on it.

        03-70 = AW 70, 3 speed + OD
        03-71 = AW 71, 3 speed + OD (called "4th gear" in 940 owners manual)

        Both have the same ratios:
        1st = 2.45:1
        2nd = 1.45:1
        3rd = 1:1
        OD/4th = 0.69:1
