K cam 140-160 1970

I am seeking information on the K cam. I have a 1970 164 with b30a and e head with twin HIF6 and 4 spd. Curious as to the merits or otherwise of swapping over to the K cam from the C cam. Andrew

The K cam is a smaller version of the D & comes in K-Jet B20E & F motors, it actual has effective timing figures similar to the C & will give you a bit more torque everywhere & possibly more fuel economy.

The D was 1st seen in the 130HP B18B rally package for 120's with dual springs. It does not work very well at all with stock single springs that have any more than a few thousand miles on them.

The Isky VV-61 is fairly similar too the K cam except it is ground on 108° lobe centres instead of the typical 111°, which can make it a tiny bit more torque depending on how it is degreed in. If you go this way, you can get the complete cam & kit from them.

The two big limiting factors on the B30A is the dogleg intake manifold will kill torque nearly everywhere & the exhaust ports are really bad. (55CFM vs 100+ Intakes). The K cam with stock springs is probably the best way to go BUT if you can get someone to grind whatever you want, a K or similar on the intake coupled with a larger low lift exhaust lobe would be better. (Dual pattern)

What 1st gear & diff ratio do you have?

Thank you for the detailed response. The 1st gear is 3.54 (box is out of a 1974 164) and the final ratio is 3.31 being the original auto diff. I have a 3.54 out of 164 auto in the shed, but was planning to change over to a 3.73. Currently 4spd but having a m410 prepared and will do the diff swap at the same time. Andrew

I had the 3.54 1st with 3.54 diff, I would have loved to have switched to the 3.31 diff. Until you get a decent intake system & fix the breathing, there's not a lot of point to using too big of a cam. I did some fairly serious cylinder head mods to mine & then found that the E exhaust system isn't good enough & then built some better headers for it.

B20Paul,

Just curious: did you buy new header flanges (I think that's the term . . . the triangular shaped piece that bolts onto the block), or did you cut them off your existing headers?

I'm wanting to build a new exhaust system for my 164 in the future, so any tips/advice you could give would be appreciated.

To the OP . . . if you find out where to get a performance cam, let me know please!

Thanks,
Lee

If you already have the K cam it would be OK. The D cam would be a little better.
The IPD 7002 cam (6 cylinder version of the 7001/Isky VV71) would be better yet.
I have used them in my 69 164 similarly equipped to yours.

Thank you for the advice. Will follow up on the Isky. Not sure IPD still doing 164 cams. Andrew

I'm pretty sure they are not - I found the paperwork for my 7002 cam and before I found
more specs I got in touch with them - they claimed not to know anything about it!

Thank you gentlemen. One of the joys of brickboard is the willingness of members to exchange information and offer views. Cheers. Also good check and balance for saving money on useless exercises or chasing rabbits down burrows.
