Fuse 16 blowing, no instrument cluster lighting, no RH tail light 200 1991

Volvo 240, 1991, USA model. Automatic transmission.

Symptoms: With a new 8A fuse in position 16 in the fuse box, starting the car immediately blows the fuse. There's no illumination for the instrument cluster. The bulb failure light in the instrument cluster is on. The right-hand tail light doesn't come on when the headlights are switched on. Dome light and headlights function correctly. Other instrument cluster lights, such as headlight high beam indicator and turn signal indicator work fine. All other fuses appear functional to the eye.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem or what to fix?

Tried the search function with "fuse 16" and "instrument cluster". Didn't find what I was looking for, so a new post was in order.

Thanks in advance.

Update to anyone currently having this problem... 01/08/2020 I have a 91 240 sedan
as the other fuse 16 blowing up the minute you switch on the lights.

I started by unplugging the R tail light and turned on lights = fuse blown.

Next I checked under the shifter to see if the wires were intact. Everything looked good but I gave it a good wiggle. Switched on the light and fuse blown.

Next I removed the cover between the seats. BTW to remove the ashtray/cover there are two screws (torx) on bottom half of each side that need to be removed before you can lift it up. Everything looked fine. I removed the upper bulb and turn on the light = fuse blown. I was about to give up but after fishing around some more I found another small light not attached to anything. I pull the bulb on that one and turned on the lights.... Bingo, I have my tail light and instrument panel light back.... Thank you Brickboard!

I had the same thing - fuse 16 would blow when I switched on the lights! I tracked it down to the seat belt latch light - wire was pinched and shorted. Easy fix once I found the schematic posted here for instrument and console lights, also saw the one for parking lights, tail lights, and number plate lights that Art posted a while back, also uses fuse 16.

Thanks to everyone for making brickboard so good, and special thanks to Art for putting this info up.

      Hello Gentlemen,

I've been trying to diagnose wonky tail lights on a 1990 240 for quite awhile. I came across this post and checked out the shifter box. The red and white wire is severed, and it was probably touching the metal. My question is, what do I do now with the red/white wire? I don't care if it doesn't illuminate the shifter box. Do I remove it entirely? Or, tape it with electrical tape? Or, try and re-attach? Not sure if there's enough room to re-attach... Any help is appreciated...

You should try to fix it, whether for you that means re-attaching it or replacing the wiring or lamp socket. The light in the shift indicator is a legal requirement for safety. Maybe find some nimble-fingered help; it is pretty cramped inside. You can knock the knob of the shifter to get easier access. Just pull out the OD switch and bump up the knob with a close-fitting open end wrench from underneath. Put a bag over the knob so you don't have to go chasing the button and spring. http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1082095

How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear what they said?

Hello, disconnect the right hand taillight from the circuit board, does the guages stay lit. if so then the circuit board for tailight has gone south. If that is not it, then to the left of the foot well under the carpet is black metal plate remove and disconnect the wire harness that runs to the back lights. Install a good fuse and check that the lights stay lit. If thats not it then under the shifter cover to the left of the shifteris the white and red wire that lights your shift indicator. See if the wire is broken and touching to ground. Those are the most common ailments of your problem. If its none of those post back. Pauli

Here's the drawing that will maybe help. I agree most common in an auto is the shift position indicator lamp fallen out/wire rubbed through, but if the rear ashtray is in a broken console, that's another easy suspect.

When someone asks you, "A penny for your thoughts", and you put your two cents in, what happens to the other penny?

Bingo. The problem was the ashtray lighting in the busted console. The plastic ashtray light cover and its attached wires had fallen down into the console crater, and had gotten wedged against the metal console support structure, creating a short.

I now have instrument cluster lights, as well as right-hand tail lights.

        Thanks!!!

I believe something like this happened to me at some point but it totally killed my taillights. Fuse kept popping every time I turned on the lights. Ended up being the red round relay (light failure relay?). Swapped it out and it worked.
