OK, called an alternator rebuild shop, and was told the plastic ring between the outer edge of the rear bearing and the alternator housing makes these a bit more difficult to remove. Five minutes of wiggling and pulling finally got it loose. As usual, I'll use anti-seize compound on mating surfaces when I reassemble, as well as all the screw threads.
