My 94-940 wagon got broadsided, need insurance advice on claim for old car

My 1984 245 was rear-ended in October. Insurance totalled it out. They paid me $1700 and I kept the car. I would have only gotten $200 more to let them take it. I added another $1800 and had it repaired. I figured I could not find another like it for that $1800 out of pocket expense, so it was worth it to keep the car I've owned since it was new. I got them to increase the cash payout by not taking a rental car from them.
