thump in drive train as I begin to drive forward. 245 A/T 200 1988

Check the rear Trailing Arm Bushings and see if they are shot, that will for sure cause a thump as you take off.

They wear out and allow the rear axle to move, as the tires start to rotate forward the rear brake caliper hits the rear tire well and you hear a loud thump. You may also find the car has a slight roaming sensation, nothing drastic at higher highway speeds if the TAB is worn.

Replacing them put an end to both the thump and the roaming sensation.

Good Luck,

Paul
