91 740 ECU work in a 92 240 200 1992

The daughter's car, the one that started the love affair with Volvos, has lost the battle. She was driving to work on the frosty morning of Feb 1; The toyota in front of her lost control and spun out across all the lanes and ended up stopped in front of her, facing her. Thanks to her quick reation and the anti-lock brakes she stopped about 4 feet from hitting him. Unfortunately the semi behind her, for what ever reason, didn't/ couldn't stop and slammed into her.
The trunk is gone, pushed like an accordian up to the back window.
Here's my question. We bought a '92 240 from the original owner's grandson, he says it has periods of hard starting, and the Volvo shop that the car has always gone to since new, replaced the AMM and it still has periods of hard starting, the engine turns over for a while before firing. The shop says that it appears to be the ECU. The grandson did not replace it before we bought it. I still have the '91 740 and am wondering if that ECU would be a suitable replacement?....

Concur with others, does not sound like ECU.
Best to test for fuel and spark when cranking and no start.
Pull plugs and that will tell you if you have fuel but no spark.
I check for spark by pulling wire and setting near a ground or attach an old spark plug.

I agree with Dan. ECU failure in the 91 240 is either a total no start (common with the pink label 0280000516) or just false check engine light codes without the no start (rarer). Far likelier is the relay or sensor. Also look at the fuse 6 (I think) for poor contact.

Compare the numbers on the ECU's and report back, there is a good chance it is compatible.

I don't think the ECU is the problem, it may be the fuel system relay or crank position sensor.

    Is the 740 a non-turbo with LH 2.4? Most non-turbos for the US market were Rex/Regina. And the 240 isn't a stick-shift with LH 3.1, right?

If BOTH cars are non-turbo LH 2.4, then the ECUs will swap. Rex/Regina and Bosch do not interchange, and turbo/non-turbo do not interchange.

Ok...so the 240 has a round coil on the stut tower and the 740 has a big square thing and a transformer thing where the coil wire attaches..So I am assuming the 240 is Bosch and the 740 is Regina so the ECU will not interchange....Damn....

I have some good ECU's, find the # and maybe I have one.
I believe that you can use a later/higher number in an earlier/lower number, but turbo/non matters, and egr/non matters if you want the cel to work.
