Transmission mount problem 200 1981

So I gots me a 1981 245, Recently pulled the engine and tranny for a bearing job. Replaced the motor mounts and the tranny mounts with new ones from IPD.

Now when I try a 'spunky' takeoff from a dead stop I can feel the transmissions raising up and thunking under the center console. I crawled under the car and found just by hand I could lift the tranny up a wee bit. However when I try to tighten the nuts on the tranny mount they're about as tight as I can get them, any more torquing on em and I'll break...something, that im sure of.

Any ideas? Would using some washers as spacers for the nuts work? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks much

Did you assemble the Crossmember properly with the Rubber Grommets? That would drop the whole deal down about 1/4"

Ya know, I dont remember there being rubber grommets when I pulled it apart. You mean rubber grommets that went between the bolts and the frame?

Yes, the 4 mounting bolts from Crossmember to Undercarriage are sandwiched with these large Rubber grommets. The undercoating kind of hold mine in place but a few fall off.
They are on my '89. I'm assuming it hasn't changed.

Tony, your suggestion makes perfect sense but just FYI--not all 240's have cushioned transmission crossmembers--some are bolted solid to the frame.-- Dave

Any ideas if it happened at a certain Year?
Or is it something like; all Manuals have Grommets and all Autos do not?

Tony--can't say I've ever pinned down which models/years get the cushioned crossmember. 260's had them - my '84 GLT Turbo w/AW71 has them - my '80 245 w/M46 does not - my '80 ex-diesel 244 parts car does not but the crossmember may have come from the donor '85 gas car (I had a friend do the grunt work of swinging the motors). Those that don't, have (sometimes?) aluminum spacers between the crossmember and the frame rail.
For the posters who have the "bump" problem I noticed checking my cars---with the cushions or spacers--the crossmembers sits about a half inch lower than the frame. As far as I know auto tranny cars have the square mount--stick shift the round. -- Dave

Thanks for responding.

BTW my '89 with M47 trani has always had the Square mount.
I guess the Bottom line is, The crossmember needs some distance from the frame to space teh trani away properly.

So I havent been able to find any volvo sites with the transmission mount grommets so im gonna try some of them 'generic bushings' you can get at Napa/Schucks or whatnot.

Any suggestions on one to get, or should I just grab whatever 1/4" bushings I can find

Thanks much

Shaun

Unless you can shop te hJunkyards for these. Many parts of the country you can walk and shop. unfortunately, I live in the Land of Liability so the days of floating around a junkyard for "good stuff' is long gone.

Our Junkyards consists of a Counter. Walk up there, Try to explain these little parts and watch the guys scratch their heads in confusion.

Weirdwaldo,

I am having the same problem. I just installed an M45 which I completely rebuilt, and every time I go over a safety bump, the shifter bracket hits the undercarriage.

Do you have a round or square mount?

Waldo,

Well mine is the square type (which I think is wrong), but I just can’t stand that clang clang clang bang bang wang dang...

Yeah it does get tiresome, doesn't it? Although many a passenger has been amused by it for some reason.
