yeah, you've pretty much described life with a 240. Instead of dielectric grease, try some ox-guard conductive grease on the ends (I find it at the hardware store, never at the autoparts stores). And spin the fuses in their holders every 6 months. Treat fuse-spinning as a routine thing like checking tire pressure and fluid levels and you won't have any more surprises.
BTW, using the copper or brass fuses rather than the ones made from something like zinc or lead will go a long way to reducing the amount of corrosion (dis-similar metals and all that).
