tranny flush aw70-71

hello all, in the past i have simply attached my hose (ipd) to the upper radiator connection and pumped out the old fluid 2 qts at a time, adding 2 qts as i went along till it ran clean. i see in the FAQS that it is recommended to drain the tranny pan and replace the same amount of fluid before proceeding with the flush. i have avoided removing the tranny drain plug out of fear of the notoriously tender threads. why is it recommended to drain this first?

thanks, chris

I believe the theory is that any larger particles that have not been trapped within the filter are remaining below the filter in the pan. And flushing will not access those bigger particles as they would have to be pulled up and thru the filter.

But since the drain plug is inset there's still gonna be plenty of the "big stuff" that doesn't get drawn out of the pan by draining. The only way to get rid of most of the crap that's settled on the bottom is by dropping the pan and cleaning it directly (which is absolutely NOT recommended).

In other words, for a flush that is part of routine maintenance it's fine to do the simple flush as you have been doing without draining via the plug.

thanks for the reponse mmal. do you think my fear of the tranny drain plug is unwarranted? with these old cars i always worry that the guy before me was heavy handed and i'll be the one to pay for it

      thanks, chris
