tranny flush aw70-71

hello all, in the past i have simply attached my hose (ipd) to the upper radiator connection and pumped out the old fluid 2 qts at a time, adding 2 qts as i went along till it ran clean. i see in the FAQS that it is recommended to drain the tranny pan and replace the same amount of fluid before proceeding with the flush. i have avoided removing the tranny drain plug out of fear of the notoriously tender threads. why is it recommended to drain this first?

thanks, chris
