high idle/Oxygen sensor question (85-245) 200 1985

My car seems to occasionally have a high idle (2200-3000 when I'm in idle) that lasts for anywhere from 1 minute to 3 minutes, and then goes away. Sometimes it doesn't matter if the engine is warm, or the temp outside.

in fact, just now I was running the engine (to let some engine dye circulate) and 8 minutes into the 10 minute burn, it revved high. Any ideas? A friend says it could be a vacuum leak, but I can't seem to locate it. Could it be the air mass?

Also, I had just installed a new ox-sensor on my 85-245 too. The original one (I assume it's original) had 233K on it. I thought that if you unplugged it as the car was running, it would make a difference in how the engine runs. but I unplugged mine (as it was running) and it made no difference whatsoever. I didn't check the voltage yet though.

Oy...I hope I figure out what is the location of my oil leak now. I thought I solved it, but it seems to have returned. rakka frakka...

high idle/Oxygen sensor question (85-245) 200 1985

High idle can be caused (allowed?) by the idle air control going out of whack. If it opens up, more air is allowed into the engine so it speeds up.

The IAC is controlled by the throttle position switch. When the throttle plate is almost closed the switch is tripped, and the IAC takes over the idle speed control. With the engine stopped, move the throttle plats and listen for the "click".

If you can catch the problem happening long enough to clamp down (pliers) on an air hose from the IAC, the idle should drop. There is a way to clean the IAC, look in the FAQ's. Clean it and if the problem isn't fixed, start checking the throttle position switch, and maybe it's wiring.

The main wiring harnesses in the 240's up to 1988 have an insulation rot problem, so check for that, too. find the gray connector mounted on the firewall as see if you can see the wires into it from the engine, look there for rot. Could be it has already been repaired.

Good Luck,

Bob

thanks greatly!

I replaced the wiring harness when I first got the car 4 years ago. I'll be checking for what you said later tonight, hopefully it'll be a simple fix. :( :/ :D
