I think you should be able to easily slide that "boot" out of the way and test to see if that makes a difference. I'm glad to hear, so far, all you are finding that has been chewed on are external things like fill plugs and adjustment nuts, and not synchronizers and gears. Rottweiler you say?? They love rubber, no?
