ANYONE seen a 240 Calipers/Rotors Upgrade to 544?? 444-544

I have not seen this topic on the Board.I saw photos of a 544 prepped to run the Baja, that had a 140 crossmember, w/ 240 ventilated rotors/big 4 piston calipers.I have seen caliper adaptors for Hot Rod apps, elongated horseshoe shaped plates to position caliper to rotor. Also, would non-power master push these big ones. This may be overkill for "normal" driving.Has any one done/seen/heard of this upgrade, or if you have the 122 disc upgrade to your 445/544, is this still the accepted workable brake upgrade. Thanks, I have been reading the board for years, and it is the "source". OHV/VoVos forever. Thanks, K.O.

ANYONE seen a 240 Calipers/Rotors Upgrade to 544?? 444-544

I wonder if the later 1800 caliper mounting brackets would fit the 240 calipers?

Paul

I just checked the spacing on the 240 caliper and the later dual setup caliper bracket and they seem to have the right spacing.

ANYONE seen a 240 Calipers/Rotors Upgrade to 544?? 444-544

Was poking around the net on this issue, and a note mentioned 164's had ventilated rotors and bigger calipers than the 140's,and a direct bolt-on(to 140)--interesing. I have a complete 140 crossmember off the car( easy to collect stuff isn't it?), and i'll check that out too. K.O.

ANYONE seen a 240 Calipers/Rotors Upgrade to 544?? 444-544

Hmm, I do happen to have a couple of 240 calipers and vented rotors laying around, since I just stuck some bigger brakes on the front of my 240 (Mazda RX-7 calipers, Volvo 960 rotors). And I also need to unbolt my 122 calipers on my PV, since they block access to the kingpin grease fittings. I guess I could try at least seeing if the 240 caliper easily bolts onto the 122 caliper mount. I'm not that interested in changing the bolt pattern on my PV though.

That fitment of the 240 caliper would be key, I believe, even with the 122 rotors. I have a 544 w/ 122 disc conversion,"resting" for years. I am seeing short supply of rebuild kits for 122 calipers, never done that exercise either, and of course 240's are common, plus are 4 piston units.I have to assume that 122 hub/spindles are a direct swap to the 544 front suspension. I have just acquired a '59 445 w/ all drums, and sourced an M41-OD trans. This and the discs are a must for driveability today.
RX7 calipers......that is tasty-much modification there to upgrade ?

Thanks for your response, and I have kept up with your posts, and your 544 is the most superb example I have seen on the net in Volvo related sites.

ANYONE seen a 240 Calipers/Rotors Upgrade to 544?? 444-544

I used a 164 cross member on my 544 and got the vented rotors but I used
Wilwood alum calipers 4 piston units, also used MG steering rack, I had the hubs redrilled. I also used a 244 diff. on my 544 and had the axles redrilled, I can't remember what rotors I used, but I also used 2 piston Wilwoods on the rear

The RX-7 calipers need a bracket that bolts onto the 240 caliper mounts, this puts them in the right spot to reach around some bigger 11.25" 960/940 Turbo rotors.

The bracket/adapter:

With the rotor and 4 piston alu caliper on:

Won't fit under 15" wheels though (at least the vast majority of them), most 16's would work, my 245 has 17's and it's not a problem.

I only belatedly discovered that installing the 122 discs in the rear position on the PV blocked off access to the kingpin grease fittings, so it's been a very long time since I greased them. Really need to get around to unbolting the calipers and squirting some grease in there before it destroys itself.
