I was driving my 940 at 70MPH and heard a racket, similar to a stainless steel blender grinding nuts and bolts. The noise subsided as I slowed down. I inspected the engine compartment and whatever else I could on the side of the freeway. The noise subsided after I took off again.

After I jacket up the car I found a hold blasted through the torque converter access plate.

I dropped the transmission and I found that a screw vibrated its way out or the seal plate, tumbled around the bell housing and finally blew out of the inspection plate. Lesion learned, use a little service removable thread locker besides ball joints and caliper bolts. I RTV'ed the hole hole in the torque converter inspection plate and gave and gave the car a new rear seal.

If this is the issue you have I would at least drop the torque converter access plate and see what may drop out. I have read one case where a small stone found its way into the bell housing and it may be your luck.

Tom
