Why are you just interested in the possibility of a bad relay? There are so many things that could go wrong?
How sure are you that it isn't the two relays under the glove compartment? One is the fuel relay, but the other is the system relay. I had an intermittent problem that sounded exactly like yours. It almost died while driving along, then was fine for weeks. Then it died again. Then it would start. And a few days later it died again, and wouldn't restart.
I replaced one of the relays (they're inexpensive in your '83, and my '84 -- not like the newer 240s with one big, special and costly relay) and it started right up, and there hasn't been any problem for over a year now.
How did you "check" your relay? The bad one in my car checked (as in the previous paragraph) out with a VOM meter, but when I hooked the control (solenoid) coil up to 12 volts, it was vibrating (buzzing) rather than staying steadily on -- and this would have reduced power to the fuel pump.
