First time Volvo owner....and new to the forum. 900 1995

Dear Schtaad,

Hope you're well and welcome to the Brickboard. Almost all parts - except some ignition/fuel system items - will interchange between any 1993-94 940s. Volvos are known for exceptions, e.g., the instrument cluster used in the 1995 cars will not interchange with those of the 1993 and 1994 model years.

If you have the service records - and read this site's FAQ section - you'll know which items need attention. For example the crankshaft position sensor (aka RPM sensor) should be replaced, if it is the factory-original item. When this sensor fails - usually because the wiring sheath cracks with age/heat and moisture shorts-out the sensor's signal - the car stops running. If the radiator, heater hoses, and rad hoses is/are ten years old (or more), it is time to replace them. When these things fail, you can lose coolant in a minute or so.

If you don't have the service records, but know where the car lived, call Volvo dealers. Ask for the service department. Given them the six or seven digits at the end of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and ask if they have records. Emphasize that they should black-out (or cut-off) the former owner's(s') name(s) and that you pay for copying and postage. You might get lucky: a dealer might not have purged the records and will share them with you.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
