ANSWER Information Needed 200 1990

As far as I know what you have is normal. They only dampen the spring rate of bounce.

They should have been restrained in the package for shipping purposes. If these are gas shocks, a temperature change can make them expand exposing the rod to more possible damage during shipping.

The gas is in there to minimize foaming of the hydraulic oil flow through the valved chambers. It does not support the car in any way.
