A year would help significantly for the AMM question. I would say a good chink of us have spare test-good ones in our cars and someone local might pony up one. I can get LH 2.4 AMM's all day long for $65. LH 2.2, 3.1, etc are much harder to find. Post a wanted on the classifieds and you are likely to get a number of offers.

Noises are tought to diagnose over the internet and you did not even indicate the kind of noise. I would assume something drive shaft related first (Center support bearing or surround, U-joint, etc) and then something exhaust related (rattling heat shield, banging from missing hangers, etc)
