If whacking the fuel pump fixes the no start, that's a pretty good indication that the pump is the problem.

The Bosch system also uses an intank pump to prime the main pump. The car will run with a failed in-tank pump. The usual failure sequence is for the intank to go, which makes the main pump work harder, causing it to fail.

The fuel gauge issue could also be related to the intank pump assembly - look in the FAQs under fuel system for somem guidance.
