Low-tox antifreeze? Dex-cool? Or plain ol' Extended Life?

Has anyone tried the low-tox antifreeze? Sounds like it's almost as dangerous as the propylene glycol because of the sodium nitrite in it, but it's less sweet, so maybe it would be less appealing to animals.

Anyway, I also remember much ado about Dex-cool (of the "use this and blow up your car" variety).

Does everyone just generally use Extended Life whatever brand?

Happy Bricking!

Yep, Zerex G05 and distilled water. Dex-Cool and those other weird anti-freezes probably aren't the worst on a new American made car. But as for an old volvo, I have a hard time trusting it, even with a new nissens radiator. Because it's not just the radiator but the heater core too. If that's original, then you risk that eating through solders and other weak spots. Plus, it isn't as toxic smelling as the Dex-Cool. I'm sure it's still toxic for pets and humans, but at least if you ever have a leak anywhere, it won't gas you out and make you sick until you can actually fix the prob.

I use Sierra coolant in my 240. Seems to do the job well in my Nissens radiator and is supposed to be safer than conventional coolant.

I think the Sierra is low-tox too. I'll go to napa, see if they have it, and if not, I'll get zerex G-05.

Cheers!

"Sounds like it's almost as dangerous as the propylene glycol" did you mean Ethylene Glycol?

Propylene Glycol is used in situations where ingestion is possible (not the only use) like cooling in breweries and dairies. Pretty safe stuff for you and your animals. Seems to work well in fleet maintained vehicles, too (there is a MIL-Spec from ARCO that is used in Generators even in the Iraqi Desert). Not sure about your average user/car owner.

I use Extended life whatever brand mixed with distilled water.

Whoops. Yes. I mean propylene glycol (low-toxicity) is less dangerous than ethylene glycol.
Thanks! I think most people do indeed use the extended life. I always use distilled water, but not all people seem to.
