95 940 wont run without direct power to the fuel pump. 900

Dear Bob Lindel,

Hope you're well. I've not had this problem and I can't recall having read of a report similar to yours. When you wired the fuel pump to the taillight, did you need to run only a single wire from the pump, or did you also need to run a ground wire? If you needed to run only a single wire, then the ground wire is fine. Even if the ground wire has been cut, the pump can be grounded to any metal surface.

Power arrives at the pump via a pink wire, that starts at terminal 3 on the fuel pump relay. It goes through fuse 11 and via Connector 102 (a two-wire connector, under the dash, on the driver's side), to the external pump (not present on 1995 models). Another pink wire goes from fuse 11 via position 17 on Connector 1 (a large, rectangular connector with about 40 wires; also under the dash) to the in-tank pump. The pink wire runs along the door sill, and then over the wheel well, to the connector just to the rear of the wheel well.

To check the pink wire for breaks - without having to take much apart - run a wire from fuse 11 to the fuel pump connector behind the wheel well.
For test purposes, this substitute wire can be run across the seats or even outside of the car. If connecting this substitute wire to the in-tank pump's connector causes the pump to run, then the pink wire has been cut or has broken. You can trace the pink wire to find the break.

It will be faster if you run a substitute wire from fuse 11, under the dash towards the driver's door, and thence along the sill, to the connector just behind the wheel well. To do this, you'll need to lift the door thresholds. This is not hard to do: the screws are under the rectangular covers, which can be "popped" out, with the tip of a knife.

When you run the wire, tuck it behind the wire harness that goes along the top of the floor pan, just under the door thresholds. Doing this keeps the wire out of harm's way. When you get to the connector, you should be able to spice (use a crimp) your substitute wire, to the pink wire that enters the connector housing. If my guess is correct, you should have a secure supply of power to the in-tank pump.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
