Terrible Windshield Wiper Shudder/Skip 200 1993

I'm sort of at my whits end dealing with a wiper shudder and skipping issue. They skip in both directions. I've tried bending the arms both ways to get it to stop, but to no avail. Also, I've cleaned the windshield with Dawn dish washing liquid, Bon Ami, Purple Power, and scraped it down with a razor blade without any change.

I used to use Rain-x wiper fluid, but currently have the plain blue stuff in there.

I'm running Bosch blades, but it did the same thing with a set of Michelin blades.

I'm running out of ideas here. Anyone else ever deal with this on a 240?

Thanks!

    IPD has this:

    http://tinyurl.com/73dfo24

Very pricey but I will say i got it and it works exactly as it says, for me. .I had water spots and windshield wiper "chatter". This "fixed" it all. Check the reviews there. At $12.95 a bottle, it better work!!

I might ask how is your windshield itself? If old and pitted/scratched/dinged/chipped, etc, it may not work for you.

BTW, I now use Goodyears' blades, got them at Costco. Works great for me.

I had this problem after using RainX. Some kind of deposit built up. I finally used, as I recall, something like acetone to get it off. Stopped using RainX and the problem never recurred. Oh, it also contaminates your wiper blades.

I was using the Rain-x wiper fluid that has the stuff in it.

I'm wondering if my washer bottle was contaminated as well. I'll probably take out the blue stuff and wash out the bottle and replace with new.

This is anecdotal but backed up by urban lore. Once you use RainX, you have to keep using it.

My wife's Protege NEVER had a problem with its wipers until such time as a "well meaning" detailer used it on all windows. My wife was so impressed she had it applied regularly at her oil-change place while I was in Iraq the first time.

When I returned I stopped using the stuff and had problems that spring with chattering and streaking issues that winter. Tried a few things mentioned by the original poster...to no avail. The moment I started using RainX twice a year, the problems ceased.

You may be able to tell I am not a fan of the product in question unless you already have a less than effective wiper system

Old blades (or old stock in the store), and wiper arm tension springs; also some deposit on the glass .... 200 1993

The wiper arm just does two things: it moves the blade back and forth, and it presses the blade down onto the glass.

The former is pretty straightforward, and you can't find fault as long as it sweeps.

The latter could be a problem -- there's a spring under the arm (lift it and you should see it), and it could have become a little weak. You could buy a whole new arm (which is bolted to the wiper arm pivot) to correct this. But I really doubt that's the cause of your frustration, and a little feel as to how much you have to pull to lift it off the glass is enough to clear that up.

The fault somewhat more likely lies with your wiper frame (the support for the rubber strip) -- it may be weak and twisting too easily -- if all you've done is replace the rubber blade insert, and are still using the old frame, then consider this a possibility.

However, I'm most (more than the previous two ideas) supportive of the possibility that your rubber strip is just old. Even if you bought new wipers, it sometimes is last year's stock -- the rubber ages, and even scraping it doesn't really help.

Try buying wipers that you know are fresh.

And finally, there might be something on the glass (that you can't see) that effects the slide of the rubber over it -- try a really good, strong glass cleaner (Invisible Glass), or Bon Ami powder (never scratches!) with a nylon scrunge pad.

Frankly, those are all the possibilities.

This usually happens on old hard blades. Just don't try the teflon ones.

I'll try some new blades, any recommendations?

The rubber on the blades doesn't feel or appear to be dried out.

Also, I replaced the complete blade unit, not just the rubber.

A car detailer once told me to use white vinegar on the blades. I never did try it but that's what they said to do if hot wax got on the windshield from a car wash.

Hot ammonia solution should also work. All I recall is that getting the RainX OFF the windshield was a pain.

The next thing I'm going to try is to clean the windshield with Ammonia and/or Windex and then replace the blades as they're probably contaminated with Rain-x.

            I'll report back my results.

Oh, Rain-X. You didn't tell us that at the beginning! .... 200 1993

Rain-X? You didn't tell us that at the beginning.

That's probably your problem, and it's really hard to remove, even with solvents.

I cleaned the windshield with Windex and then acetone also cleaning the wipers, but I'm still getting skipping.

I took one of the wipers off and moved across the windshield by hand and it felt as though the windshield is too" sticky". I then ran the wiper across the cargo area window the same way and it didn't skip at all.

Is it posible that a windshield can be too clean? Something is definately different about this one.

I'm not interested in going back to Rain-x as I think that's what started all of this trouble.

              Any other ideas?

                "Any other ideas? "

I used to be a Rain-x evangelist. 20 years ago, before my introduction to these fine 200 series cars. Well, the marque had nothing to do with it, I just put a lot of miles on then, and loved watching the rain blow off the windshield, being able to see perfectly in the wakes of the semis on the Jersey turnpike in a Friday evening downpour, without even turning the wipers on.

But being caught out needing a fresh application tested my discipline more than once. Haven't used it in years.

But I have used Rain-x Remover. Dunno if this is still available, but to me, it looks like Soft Scrub with a premium price tag.

But I suggest you lift the blades from the windshield and offer some token resistance while you operate them in low speed. It may be hard to tell, but if the drive mechanism is binding to the point the motor is bogging, the wipers may not have enough sweep power to overcome the glass contact resistance smoothly. That could be electrical as well. Be sure the motor is getting the full battery voltage. http://cleanflametrap.com/wiper.html

Lotta buts in this post. Better than I,I,I.

When I've had the dash out I've found the retaining hardware securing the wiper arm pivots to the firewall under the dash (and the motor) were loose. Mind you , this was a great number of RWD Volvos and dashes I was into.

I've also taken apart these assemblies and greased them. That helps.

I recall reading or hearing someone say something about stuffing some silicone lube (no hyrdrocarbon lube!) between the rubber seal and the wiper shaft you see with the wiper arm removed. Doubful that'd cause it but a shot of some kind of silicon lube or grease may make that seal last longer.

I have used Rain-X and never had this problem. Mind you, the newest Rain-X bottle I have is from like 1996. Don't use it much. Maybe Rain-X is different now?

I've also used Silblade silicon blades.

                  cheers,
