There must be a drag on the gauge, but that said, it can be quite a push to get it to pass through. You can assume you won't lift the valve off the seat with the gauge, so if it passes through easily, it's thinner than the clearance. The other approach is the "go-no go" system. Keep increasing the feeler thickness until it simply won't go, and then back off until it does. A gauge .002 thicker than the clearance will NOT pass through. A gauge .001 thinner will pass easily.
So try the go-no go method, and you'll get a "feel" for it.
