Hi,
I have a shop manual for 1975 volvo 240s. How ever i own a 1990 volvo 240 and i am getting ready to replace my belts and i was wondering if the belt locations and adjustments where moved within those 15 years. Also if you there are any tricks to replacing belts I'd love to hear Thanks guys!

Go to the top of this page and pull the drop down menu from the box labelled "more". Click on "700/900 FAQ" and find drop down menus in that page with specific and detailed info on belt changing for B230 engines, which is what is in your year of 240.

Oh yes they are different. You need a 10 mm socket and a couple of 13mm wrenches to change the belts out on a 1990. For a decent manual get a Bentley, for a fair manual get a Hayes, for emergency bathroom paper get a Chilton.

The bug a boo is the there is a hidden 13mm nut on the back side of the compressor that makes it seem like the compressor will never move. Feel for an oval headed nut on the top back of the compressor and you found it. You just need to loosen the 13mm nuts, do not remove them. Then loosen the 10mm long bolts that tension the belts.

My first time took a couple of hours and a few dirty words. That was before I found out about that hidden nut on the compressor thanks to the BB.

Good luck, and oh, you need a set of matched belts for the water pump and alternator. At least get two belts from the same date code.

My 2 cents. Once you use the long "tensioner bolt" to tighten the belts. Then tighten down the lock nuts, back the tensioner bolt off like half a turn. It is only designed to tighten the belt, not hold the tension. They have a tendency to twist in two.
