1990-240 transmission update. Auto-RX? 200

History:
Tranny stopped shifting properly.

Mainly not shifting into 4th, but occasionally having problem gettting into 3rd.
I dropped pan. Observed some accumulation on magnet. Screen not blocked.

Flushed using 12 qts, super tech mercon/dextron.
Checked overdrive circuit(relay, wiring). All ok.

Removed solenoid. passageways open, but I cut a grove between the channels anyway.

Probed the overdrive orifices in the tranny with thin screw driver. No obstructions.

After doing these things, problem remained. Not shifting properly.

Approx 200 miles ago, I installed auto-rx(a product, available via the internet), into transmission.

As of yesterday, transmission was shifting properly, smoothly. Getting on the freway had become a no no, but things were going so well until I decided to give a try. Sure enough, I drove half way across sacramento at freeway speeds, with out a problem.

I drove for quite awhile yesterday, waiting for the symptoms to reappear, but they did not.

The jury is still out, but Im hopefull. I will provide further updates.

Suppose to leave the Rx in the trans for 1000 miles, flush, and fill with fresh fluid. That is what I intend to do.

Thanks all

Larue

Sounds promising, did the initial 12 quart flush help?

If 12 qt flush helped, it took about 300 miles. But initially, after the flush, there was no change.

The auto-rx instructions are to install it before flushing, unless the fluid is really, really bad. Of course, I didnt add it until after the flush.

At this point, I dont know what is working, but something is.

Did you flush it by removing the trans line to the radiator?

A flush using this method has fixed trans issues for numerous people.

Yes. That is the method I used(Flused through the upper trans cooling line).
That does raise the question of which is having the effect, the fresh tranny fluid, or the Auto-rx. Perhaps I should've given the fresh tranny fluid more time to work.

Is there any data on the average time required for fresh tranny fluid to clean things up inside the trans.

No data. The flush often works. But I suspect that you had some gunk that was amenable to the AutoRX which then solved your problem. AutoRX is a very effective detergent. BTW, did you use it with normal or synthetic ATF?

I used regular fluid.
Car is still shifting smoothly, predictably.

Thanks
