A repair write up/story-for a broken turn signal 200 1992

I wanted to post about a problem (and solution) I had the other day with our 92 245 that my wife drives.

She returned home the other day and said that the left turn signal (stalk) wouldn't click itself automatically back into position after left turn use, but it WOULD when you make a right turn. Each time when using the left turn signal you had to turn it off manually.

I checked the archives here on the BB and couldn't find anything. Figured I would be needing a new turn signal stalk switch and that would be that.

So I detached the - battery cable, waited a few minutes and dug into the steering column. Luckily I had experience with taking one apart, it ended up taking longer to locate the two different Torx drivers that I needed than it did to pull the needed steering column pieces.

Once I got to the turn signal I took a picture of the wires with my phone so I would know what went where. I undid the two screws and carefully lifted it off the column.

On examination I was surprised at the simple mechanics of it and it's construction. There is a central "nose" that sticks out making contact with the inner steering wheel. On each side of the "nose" is a tiny spring to retract the turn signal stalk. What had happened was the left signal retraction spring had slipped off it's post. Found my pick set, reposted the spring, put everything back together and returned to my wife a hero. I think she was more impressed she didn't hear me cursing and it didn't take me hours.

Hopefully this story might help someone out,

Travis
