Sorry, but I can't follow your logic. We, who have worked on Volvos for any length of time, have come to rely on that line of paint across the inner and outer components of the damper as a means of quickly verifying it hasn't slipped. Of course, if you really thought the object was to "smear paint all over" the pulley, perhaps you didn't "see" it the way we did.
