Overheated engine and a warning to fellow brickboarders. 900

I'm sorry.
In my humble opinion, when an engine has undergone a major and severe overheating event,it is most likely toasted.(no pun intended).
I think your mechanic is probably right in saying;"..replacing the head might just be a waste of money. "
Of course, there may be hope, high quality synthetic lubricant may minimize damage, but when an engine gets overheated to the point of near seizure, all the parts contort.Seals and gaskets sinter and fry...etc.
We can imagine the engine,on the expressway, turning 30k rpm,as the temp gauge pegs into the red, and the driver tries to pull over, or maybe make it home.....the pistons nearing red hot!..If the car quits running from overheating, it's major bad!.(obviously).

The worst part, is not really knowing the extent of the damage.A Volvo engine is stout and resilient!

My sincere condolences Phil C.
Best wishes.
