How long does the Regina fuel pump last?? 700 1992

My daughter's 1992 745 has the Regina system and only one in-tank fuel pump. Since I had an issue with my wife's 89 740 in-tank pump (broken power wire) I have changed out both the 89 and the 86 745 in-tank pump (both use Airtex pumps).
The Regina uses a single larger Airtex pump than the Bosch system that uses 2 pumps.
The 1992 has over 200,000 miles on the OEM and I was considering changing it out for a preventive measure. Would this be a prudent step? Or should I wait till it conks out by itself?
Thanks,
el raidman

G-

$90 + tax at AZ. $105 + time at FCP. $125 + tax (Delphi brand) at Carquest on Research.

Might be worth it to make a little trip, spend a bit more, and get a good quality pump that fits correctly out of the box and doesnt' require any fiddling.

Too hot outside to do anything anyways...

Kerry

How long does the Regina fuel pump last?? 700 1992

Finally got the SOB back into the tank. I guess with the Texas heat, the new gasket/seal swelled up and I spent 5 hours struggling with the new seal, the OEM and an extra one I had to see which would fit. I was following the directions on the FAQ. WRONG, FAQ!!!!
Please revise the directions, Art ?, to include the following:
In case the second set of ridges does not allow the seal to enter, then one has to use a lot of vaseline and ( this is the heresy!) INSTALL THE SEAL INTO THE OPENING OF THE TANK FIRST, THEN PUSH THE SENDING UNIT VERY CAREFULLY INTO THE SEAL'S OPENING. BE SURE TO USE PLENTY OF LUBE SO THAT THE SENDING UNIT SLIDES IN EASILY.
Thanks,again, Kerry.

Glad you got it done! It took me a while also to get it in...thanks for reminding me that the seal goes into the tank first..couldn't quite remember!

I just re-read the instructions on the FAQ and it says , although in small print, that the seal should be placed inside the opening of the tank first. It needs to be written in CAPTIAL LETTERS.
Hopefully the editor will be on the ball and save us Brickboarders many hours of struggle, not to mention sore wrists and cut-up skin.

I think you can get the OEM pump from Volvo or FCP and swap it out on the existing unit. Be careful of some aftermarket stuff, you don't want to do this again in 9 months. Mike

Airtex?? 700 1992

"The Regina uses a single larger Airtex pump than the Bosch system that uses 2 pumps."

I'm confused by your mention of "Airtex". That's not a pump type or style. It's an aftermarket brand, and one that some uses here have not rated highly.

At 200,000 miles, I'd replace the OE pump. We had one quit at 210,000. Not sure I'd go with Airtex, but Art Benstein had good luck with some other aftemarket brand from FCP about 4 years ago.

Airtex?? 700 1992

Thanks,Bruce.
She just needs this Volvo to last about another year or so till she graduates from law school. She will be up for a newer Volvo then. I figure if the Airtex lasts 3-4 years ( for the next owner), it will be worth it.

I bet a newer Volvo will be a lot less reliable than a 745. I bought mine about 3 years ago with 472,000 klicks on it. When I told the seller I was shocked at the high mileage, he assured me these Volvos go a million klicks. So far the biggest repair I've had to do is replace the steering rack because the steel lines rusted through. I have a notebook a previous owner kept logging repairs and don't see anything about replacing the fuel pump. Two or three times it has failed to start (just cranks) and I got it going by pulling the fuel pump fuse and replacing it, so maybe it is getting weak.

Since it's your daughter's I'd probably replace it. If it were my car I'd probably keep driving it.

FWIW - My 90 240's OEM Bosch main pump was still going strong at 300k when I sold the car. I replaced my in-tank pump at @ 190k because the sending unit was rusted out so I needed to open up the tank anyway.

I got my 91 in 2000 with 80k miles. The fuel pump went at 119k miles. FWIW. Dont forget to put a new filter sock and change the round rubber gasket on the sending unit. Good luck

Muchas Gracias!!! I will phone the dealer tomorrow to buy the rubber gasket and the Airtex pump and sock from Autozone...then get high on the fumes laying down in the back of the 745 inside the garage.
Fun times!!

hello
at least its easier in the wagon. i use a fan to keep the fuel smell moving out.
i say its a good idea to do the pump at 2 hundred thousand especailly if its your daughter or wifes car.
my 95 940 turbo fuel pump (one pump system) gave up the ghost recently. i parked at work and at the end of the day the pump was dead. giving no sign of going bad. that single bosch pump had 202 thousand.
read alot of posts here the regina pump are normally good for 175 thousand.
good luck
mike

Disconnect battery and no fumar my friend! I do fuel work out in the open and with a fire extinguisher close by. Plan your fuel so you dont have much in the tanks and also it can be tricky maneuvering the entire assembly back into the tank. You know when you get it right when the tank is near quarter full and making a tight turn and there is no brief hesitation due to fuel starvation...good luck

Also IIRC, it was a bit tricky getting the sending unit with its new seal back in place and I used a bit of petroleum jelly to help. Cant remember if I put the seal in the tank first or on the sending unit. Also note the orientation of the filter sock .

Thanks, Chuffs!!
The FAQ has a detailed description on how to do the Regina pump and I have just done both my 89 and 86 740's pumps. I also use a fan to blow out the fumes from the garage and a fire extinguisher next to the car. I'd do it in the driveway, but it is too slanted.
