The instrument cluster comes out with the dash in place. Pull the front seat clear to the floor. Job is best done on your back with your head nestled on the pedals. Wear eye/dust protection.
In my experience you do have to pull the ignition (see other posts), and the lighter. Disconnect the speedo, of course, and the wires to the fuel gauge (batt disconnect first!!!)and pull the temp gauge from back. There are two nuts that hold the cluster from the back, one at each end. With the cluster free, drop it back and down a bit towards the center of the car. Bring the outboard end out through the opening and then torpedo the whole thing out. From there, it's on the bench. I do doubt you'll be able to repair the odo though, replacement with another working cluster is more likely.
Refit is the reverse. Whole thing is a bit intimidating but you'll understand your dash a bunch more after. Happy wrenching...
